Steven Gabaldón, M.Ed.
Teacher Mentor

Steve Gabaldόn serves as an adjunct Instructor/Mentor for the Humanizing and Culturally Affirming Teacher (HCAT) program.  His responsibilities include mentoring students as they teach in the Tucson area public schools.  Mr. Gabaldόn also teaches and delivers lectures about best practices in the classroom.  Steven meets with HCAT students to provide them with feedback about their teaching and supports them while they work to improve their craft.   

With 27 years of experience, Steven has dedicated his career to public education, particularly in Title 1 schools. His journey began as a classroom teacher at the middle school tier, where he skillfully instructed science to 6th, 7th, and 8th graders. Notably, he also adeptly taught bilingual middle school science and Chicano Literature. In 2003, Mr. Gabaldόn achieved his master's degree in educational leadership, marking the start of his role as an assistant principal at the junior high level within Mesa Public Schools.

Subsequently, Steve transitioned back to the Tucson Unified School district, taking on the position of vice principal across high school, middle school, and elementary school levels. His commitment to education led him to serve as a K-8 principal for a span of four years within the Tucson Unified School District, adding further depth to his extensive experience.

Rene Martinez, M.Ed.
Teacher Mentor

Rene F. Martinez is a career public school educator. His classroom experience includes middle and high school instruction. He was mentored in the Tucson Unified School District Mexican American Studies Department where he worked as an educator developing curriculum, teaching, assisting is site interventions and training teachers and parents. He was one of the original plaintiffs in the legal challenge to HB 2281, the Arizona ban on Mexican American Studies. Rene lives in Phoenix, Arizona with his two sons and is an Assistant Principal of Student Success in the Phoenix Union High School District.
